I’m listening to a live ustream from the office of Gary Vaynerchuk and he is in the middle of doing an interview with some sort of wine publication. (It’s not a social media or “new media” publication because the interviewer just doesn’t get how the world of information and opinion has changed.)
Based on her questions I strongly get the sense that the “nobility” of the wine industry doesn’t like WLTV. She’s asking ”when will the episodes end?”; “Can you really go on forever?”; “Who are you really talking to, where, how old?” “Where are you at with the expensive Bordeauxs?” Many don’t realize that Gary has the chops to talk and understand the wine industry, and because he’s not “classically trained” they automatically disrespect him; he knows his stuff.
The “old timers” don’t like the influence someone like Gary has because he can completely ignore all of the expensive marketing and propaganda that the industry has and just go with how he honestly feels and have more weight and impact than traditional media when it comes to wine lovers. Gary has always looked for value and not ultra expensive wines you have to taste or get, and the big marketing dollars translate into expensive wines whether they’re worth it or not.
These people don’t understand how the world has shifted and the way that companies no longer control their own message it’s us in the “new world” of communication and connections that control the company’s message. Gary keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll keep watching.
PS—I was typing and composing these thoughts while the interview was going on. As I add this paragraph Gary Vaynerchuk is now taping the Wine Library TV for today (he has a guest on) and the interviewer is watching from the “laid back couch”; and I’m getting my thoughts and views out to the world before she can even get a rough draft to her editor. If this doesn’t show the power of new-age communication, then I don’t know what does.
